a poem for my Mum
If I Could Have Half
If I could have half of your strength and resolve
I would shoulder the burden of others with ease, as you did,
I would bend but not break.
If I could have half of your courage and grit
I would meet my troubles as you met yours,
square my shoulders, lift my chin and face them down.
If I could have half of your drive and spirit for the game
My success would come but be hard fought
Adversaries would know my name.
If I could have half of your tenacity and purpose
There would be no such thing as can’t
Despite those who say it couldn’t be done.
If I could have half of your zest and your lust for life
I would bring light to the darkest of corners,
Put smiles on the faces of those who need it most.
If I could have half of the love you gave me and pass on to my children,
They would never know doubt or insecurity
They will know they are loved as I did then and do now
You loved and cared for us but taught us how to think for ourselves You welcomed others into your family and loved them as your own. You were a pillar and a tower of the strongest light for those who needed you
You are irreplaceable and our hearts will forever ache, but we will continue to search for the happiness you wanted for us and carry you with us in that search.
In every kiss I give my children, in every success we enjoy, in every achievement!! Every time I feel the sun on my face, you will be there.
If I could be half the person you were to me, I’d live proud and happily.

You welcomed me into your family with open arms and you looked after me as well as your grandchildren. You were never judgmental only offering warmth and kindness at all times. You taught me how to be content and not worry about the small stuff. We became good friends and I will miss you very much.
